Watch Dogs 2 was developed and published by Ubisoft, and within it there is a mission where you must infiltrate and hack into a fictionalized version of Ubisoft’s San Francisco offices. Once inside you must steal a video game trailer and sell it to a website. Some thought that was just Ubisoft having a little cheeky joke, and yet sources are telling Kotaku that the trailer players steal is for a game that is very real.
The game is reportedly being developed under the codename Pioneer and is a space exploration game that was set to debut in 2017. Now though the sources are saying it’s being retooled and is unlikely to see the light of day until sometime in 2018.
What’s funny about this supposed leak is that Kotaku has already been in a bit of a tiff with Ubisoft in the past thanks to its coverage of the leaked Assassin’s Creed assets. Even in Watch Dogs 2 a fictional Ubisoft employee can be heard voicing concerns that the Pioneer trailer will be leaked to the gaming press. He even goes on to mention specifically that he doesn’t want another Assassin’s Creed situation. And now of course we have sources telling Kotaku the supposed truth about the Pioneer trailer.
Which means the Universe either has a good sense of humour or Ubisoft is pulling off a big trolling operation.
